2023 Report
The VIC XC Falls Creek On Snow Camp ran during the school holidays from the 1st-5th of July and was a great success with 23 athletes attending. This camps focus is around supporting athletes as they transition back onto snow with an emphasis on developing technique skills. Athletes were treated to excellent snow conditions at Falls Creek with some spectacular weather (as well as some more wintery weather!)
The majority of athletes and all camp staff were based at the YMCA Howman's Gap Discovery Camp, located just 5km from the entrance to Falls Creek. Staying at Howman's Gap was a first for this camp and it was a great facility with excellent catering, recreational spaces and the added convenience of being much closer to the trails meant athletes could return to the accommodation between sessions to get better recovery. A big thanks you to all the staff at Howmans Gap who made our stay there so great.
The first 3 days of Camp were focused on a mix of technique sessions run by our camp coaches Anna Trnka, John Max Ertner, Robbie Catto Smith and Adam Barnett including lots of balance drills, o pole (skating and classic) drills, ski specific strength, agility, downhill cornering as well as skating and classic technique sessions. On day 4 athletes had the opportunity to dust off the cobwebs with a practice time trial race, 2.5km classic with individual starts. And finally on the last day of camp athletes tested their endurance and rain jackets in a long and wet ski covering over 20km.
Outside of training sessions athletes had the opportunity to participate in several workshops focused on improving athlete knowledge and independence including:
A grip waxing workshop
Race planning and race evaluation
Understanding over training and relative energy deficiency in sport
How to fuel for sport and recovery for performance
"I had and amazing time of the VIC team camp! I learnt so much from the fantastic coaches and have since seen some significant improvements in my skiing. The team atmosphere was great, I loved spedning time with my teammates on and off snow and I made lots of new friends. I can't wait for the next one!" - Sean Hope Craig
A final big thanks you to our wonderful parent volunteers who helped with supporting athletes and transport to and from training session everyday, Doris Glier and Emily Harvey.
Stay tuned for details of the next training camp on September 16-18th during the next school holidays!
